"Watch out for the tree!"
Suzy said as she grabbed the aluminum base tube with her left
hand.
"Let go!" Scott yelled as he grabbed her wrist and
forced her hand off the control bar.
Suzy screamed.
"Dammit!" Scott said as he flung their bodies to
one side to compensate for Suzy pulling on the control bar.
He turned the glider so they just missed an oak at the edge
of the landing zone. The left wingtip gently brushed a branch.
"Never touch the control tubes!"
He leveled the glider then pulled in hard on the aluminum
bar and dove them straight toward the ground.
"I'm going to land fast. Speed is your friend,"
Scott said. "We'll drag our feet in the grass until we
flare."
Suzy's grip tightened and she yelled, "Get this ride
over with!"
The glider leveled off a foot above the fresh cut field, and
the passing grass whipped the tips of Scott's shoes, the aroma
biting his nostrils.
"Watch out! You're gonna hit that glider!"
"That guy landed in the middle of the landing zone and
now has to carry his 85-pound glider all the way across the
field to his truck. I'm too lazy for that."
"Now you're going to hit the hangar!"
"No. I'm going to land next to it, so we don't have to
walk so far to the truck." And it's a short walk to the
TV to see if something did hit the shuttle.
About twenty feet from the hangar, Scott pushed out on the
control tubes, and the glider popped up a yard into the air,
setting them on their feet. They finally stopped a few feet
from the wall. Scott felt Suzy's legs buckle, but her harness
caught her before she could kneel to the ground.
She crawled out from under the glider, sweat beginning to
form on her face.
"So what did you think of your first flight? Exciting?"
I wish Amber where here to give me a hug. I wonder how's she's
doing up there on Atlantis.
Suzy breathed a few rapid breaths and thrust her arms back
as she stood. "You almost killed me! You jerk! You almost
ran us into a tree! And then you almost hit a building! What
kind of a nutcase pilot are you?"
"I thought you wanted to forget about your ex for a couple
of minutes."
"Yeah, but-"
"Did you think about him?"
"Uh . . . no."
"Then why are you screaming at me? You got what you really
wanted."
Scott turned around and saw a man rushing towards him with
a cell phone.
"Are you going to fire me?" Scott asked him.
"We'll talk about that later. I think your mom's been
calling you every minute out of the past twenty."
"They probably calling to tell you you're a jerk!"
Suzy said
Scott looked at the caller ID, and then glared back at Suzy.
"I've got bigger things than your opinion to worry about."
"You insensitive
!"
He placed a finger in his left and held the phone to his right
ear and faced away from Suzy. "Be quiet! It's my mom."
He said over his shoulder. "She has cancer."
He saw Suzy clench her fists.
"Hi, mom. Are you okay? Oh. I've been flying. Did I hear
about the space shuttle? I thought I heard someone say something."
He moved toward the hangar. He saw out the corner of his eye
that Suzy turned on her heel and walked away.
